Users must synchronize contacts in order to use remote lookup in Contacts.

If an LDAP server is defined in NotifyLink and your user account is set up to access it, you can use the iPhone/iPod touch Contacts application to search your enterprise directory for contacts in your organization.  However, the user account must be configured to synchronize contacts both on the server and on the device in order for Remote Lookup to be available.

On the server, from the Client Web, check the settings:
General > Control Options - "Enable PIM Processing" should be checked
PIM > Contacts  - "Synchronize contacts with the device" should be checked

On the device, in the Settings check:
Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.  Then tap your account and turn Contacts ON.

Having contact synchronization turned on, on the device, is not a prerequisite for using remote lookup while composing mail, however.
As you begin to type an email address in the To/Cc/Bcc fields of the compose screen, the device will automatically perform a remote lookup based on the characters you enter.  This will occur even if you are not synchronizing contacts (as is required when using remote lookup from the Contacts application) as long as your user account is set up to access the LDAP server.

On devices running iPhone OS 3.0 this issue is resolved.  Even if Contacts is disabled on the device, a user may open the Contacts application and use the remote lookup.

Note that you cannot edit contacts from an enterprise directory or save them to iPhone or iPod touch.
