NotifyLink ActiveSync Solution:

Some non-numeric characters used in the phone number fields of a contact created on the server, do not synchronize to the iPhone/iPod touch. 
Users expecting hyphens or periods used in phone number entry will not see these characters on the device.
However, the device does show +  , * and #
